Should I Be Using a Wedding Photographer Who Is New to the Business?

Your wedding only happens once, so if your photos are a flop, you will never get those moments back. But does this mean you should forgo photographers who have never shot a wedding on their own before?

Not necessarily.

There are a few things to consider before you go ahead with a photographer with minimal wedding experience.

  • Most photographers who are shooting a wedding on their own for the first time have trained with more experienced photographers. Find out more about their training and who they’ve assisted in the past to make sure they are competent.
  • If you’re only hiring a specific photographer to save money, this is not wise. While it’s important to find a photographer who fits in with your budget, you still need someone who is going to leave you with photos you love.
  • Take a close look at their portfolio to get a better idea of their photography and editing style. If it’s not what you’re looking for, don’t force it for the sake of price. Ask to see a full gallery of multiple weddings, especially an indoor wedding if yours is going to be indoors.
  • Find out more about their equipment and backup plans. What equipment do they use? What happens if they can’t make it on the day? Do they have backup equipment and what processes do they follow to back-up images?

By considering these factors, there is a chance you could find an affordable wedding photographer who has minimal experience but can still produce the results you’re hoping for. The key is to do as much research as possible before you commit.  But also, know that your images are the one thing you walk away from your wedding day and get to keep and its how you remember your day.
